Drag and drop function disabled?? Anyone know how to fix???

Hello all...

I am having issues opening files in photoshop. I have always been able to drag and drop photos directly onto the photoshop icon.. and they automatically open. Just recently, when i drag items into the program, photoshop itself opens... but now the photos dont. I have to go into photoshop manually, select open, then find the files i want to open, and open them that way. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Would much appreciate it.

Thanks,
jen

EEEK! Where did my Filters go?

I'm using mainly CS. Suddenly my effects filters are nowhere to be found. The pull down menu is populated primrily by grayed-out options (non-selectable of course) with only a small number of filters left, like the Blur selections.

I've not messed with *any* archives pertaining to my version of CS other than the .psd files themselves.

What happened? How can I resolve the issue?

Any wisdom?

Photo retouch alternative to Pshop?

I've been a Photoshop user for decades now and have earned my living with it. It came bundled with my first $1,000 scanner. (Yes there was a time scanners cost that much and a full version of Photoshop did come with it.) I'm sticking with Photoshop.

HOWEVER....
I host artists gatherings and our next meeting will be about shooting artwork for the web. Is there something out there that will allow simple retouching or color correcting that doesn't cost a fortune? I'd like to offer this group some suggestions. I've been asked about Photoshop Elements, but since I have the big boy, I don't know what it can do, what its limitations are. Most of these artists are not likely to run out and buy Photoshop.

Lacking RAW talent.....

So according to the book im reading about my Canon XSi- when i "File...Open" a RAW image file in PS, Adobe Camera RAW (? that name right?) should come up....

It seems like it does - the opening 'name screen' title box comes up- but the menu bar never changes, and it just flips back to PS when i click on anything...
Adobe Camera RAW or whatever never comes completely on or whatever it looks like......
Any suggestions...? I have PS 8.0....
I shot a bunch of portrait shots in RAW (semi-by accident) in sucky light- was thinking it would be good to post-production them better in RAW form....

Are the sliders and controls in RAW in PS just like the PS Levels/Shadow:Highlight/Brightness:Contrast...?

BTW- bought the upgrade thinking i could just put it on the copy i have ( which i got from an old job)- worked on the copy of Illustr i got....
But it wont take the registration # from the copy i have...
Any crafty suggestions...?

Thanx all....

Also, my step-daughter loves photography and would have fun using Photoshop on my computer, but I am not sure since she is still in High School.

Yicks, $700.00 is a lotta money!

Hi there
I do a little photography on the side, definitely not my full time gig and want to get into it some more. I just maxed out my credit card getting a new Mac Pro and really can't afford to pay for the latest version of Photoshop. I have been a photo student up till now but am not currently enrolled so I can't get a discount.
Does anyone have a copy that I could "borrow" ?

I am trying to save/publish a high resolution (small 1") picture to the web. The problem I am having: 1 the hi res is making my image huge, 2/ when I save for web the end product has a white border around the image. What tools or tips can I do in photoshop to make my image a high resolution but keep the size I want. The image has two colors. Anything suggestions please?

graphics card recommendations?

HI, I have a late 2005 G5 2.3Ghz Dual Core PowerMac with 4.5Gb RAM and the stock NVIDIA GeForce 6600 graphics card

I am wondering if it would be worthwhile upgrading my graphics card for use with my 30"AppleLCD that i use for Photoshop and Aperture and Final Cut. I movie etc.?

can i gain appreciable rendering speed or quality of my images?
thanks :)

Orphan Works Bill: Gov. Geared To Exploit Artists!

Imagine a world where the things you made belonged not to you, but to someone else - unless you paid for the right to own them first. Under the Orphan Works Bill, anyone who produces a creative work would have to pay exorbitant sums of money for the simple act of creating art and for the continued ownership of their art through unending copyright registry fees.

This is what the Orphan Works Bill proposes: the bill proposes that as soon as any work of art is created, it would be required to be registered for a moderately high fee with ALL of SEVERAL copyright houses and entered into a giant database. Anyone who does not do this would risk any creation being taken and sold by someone else, and that would be legal because ALL UNREGISTERED WORK would be considered ORPHANED. This includes such simple things as family photos - if posted on the Internet and not registered with a copyright database, your photo album could be used in a series of ads by a major corporation for their latest campaign - and: 1) there would be nothing you could legally do to stop it, because 2) they could legally own your art just by registering it first, and 3) they wouldn't give you a dime. The only way you would regain control of your art is if the previous owner of the copyright allows it to lapse, thereby providing you the opportunity to purchase it.

The OWB extends to all the arts: illustration, photography, computer, mixed media, jewelry, ceramics, acting, performance art, singing, song writing, sculpting, costuming, etc., ad nauseam. It requires the constant registering of any artwork, over and over, ad nauseam; otherwise, your work *could* be used and sold by the government - which will own and run the giant registration companies and databases - for profit. And there is nothing you *would* be able to do about it - ever.

This adds up to a lot of money very quickly - for those who make art and register it, and for those who stand to profit from unregistered art. And not only that, but remember that the copyrights must constantly be renewed as proposed by this bill. Dare I say it? The Orphan Works Bill seeks to totally disempower any creative process in the entire United States of America.

Excerpt from The Illustrators' Partnership Orphan Works Blog, dated September 23, 2008:

Is it wise to concentrate our nations’ copyright wealth in the hands of a few corporate databases? With the meltdown on Wall Street, this might be a good time to ask Congress that question.

The Orphan Works bill would pressure copyright holders to subsidize the start ups of giant commercial databases. The contents of these databases would be more valuable than secure banking information. Yet who can watch the ongoing failure of investment banks that were “too big to fail’ without asking why government should want to create these privately owned image banks on the backs of small business owners who neither want nor need them. Here are some of the questions we’ve raised before about this bad legislative scheme:

• Who’s to be trusted with these databases?
• Who’s to manage them and in whose best interests?
• What happens when a database is hacked?
• What happens when one fails?
• What happens when one is acquired?
• What happens when the terms of service are changed?
• What happens when registration fees become prohibitive?
• What happens when maintenance fees are piled on?
• What happens when exorbitant commissions are imposed?
• What happens to artists who can’t afford to register?
• What happens when registered artists can’t afford to maintain their registrations?
• Will artists have to register their immense bodies of work in competing registries?
• What happens to your business when your clients start calling the databases, not you, to clear rights to your work?
• Why should small business owners be forced to entrust their business information to outside business interests?

Don't delay! Read the latest updates and archives on the Orphan Works Bill at The Illustrators' Partnership Orphan Works Blog found at: ipaorphanworks.blogspot.com/ - and inform yourself. Take it one step further and write to Congress using their handy link to do just that! The more people that know about and speak out against this Bill, the more Congress and your representatives will hear the people's voice and be moved to act in our interest. Our interest is presumably what got them into office, so presumably it is what keeps them there as well. Let them know what you think of the Orphan Works Bill!

If you have never written to Congress, it is easy! Short, one-page letters are highly recommended. See this helpful and simple to follow article on writing guidelines from about.com: usgovinfo.about.com/library/...0199.htm. Another article at itfs.org/webnow/licens...o_congress.htm provides a fast look-up for all your representatives addresses, and suggests that posted letters are much more likely to be recieve attention than emails - as do the guidelines at the United Nations Association of the United States of America (www.unausa.org/site/pp.asp).

***

To put the notion of the Orphan Works Bill into a perspective that has immediate relevance to lots of people on tribe, I'll ask you this: What would Etsy buyers - and more especially sellers - do if this bill was to pass?

Most artists can just afford supplies and a little self-promotion time - let alone registering EVERY SINGLE ITEM of their creation with SEVERAL copyright institutions.

Own your art!

Blending or averaging pixels using “Cutout” or ???

I’m trying to determine the average RGB hue of several samples of monochromatic painted canvas. I have scanned each piece, but of course the hue of each pixel in the canvas is different, depending on whether I choose pixels from the highlight, shadow, et cetera.

My solution in this color mapping quest was, I thought, to select a sample of the scanned canvas in Photoshop, then use the “Cutout” filter to sort of average them all the pixels together into one solid hue, one that is no longer jumbled by the texture of the canvas (no matter how much I zoom in). Alas, I don’t think the “Cutout” function is accurate enough...it renders a bright lemon yellow as maize, a nice raspberry as mulberry, and so on. The hue seems a bit skewed, and with less chroma than I perceive in the untouched images. Since I’m trying to map real color samples to RGB in order to compare gamuts of possible primaries, I need a bit more accuracy.

To the point: is there a way, in Photoshop or some other affordable program, to determine the average hue of a mostly-monochromatic piece? I can’t find anything else that will render pixels all equally, and “Cutout” is all I’ve thought of so far. Thanks in advance for your help (I hope)!

Stupid Elements question (I think)

I had a picture I wanted to use for an LJ icon, which has a 100x100 pixel limit. Cropping the extraneous parts was easy enough, but I couldn't figure out how to re-size the larger image down to 100x100. The menu marked resize never gave me a pixel option, and never affected the image as it appeared on the screen - I suspect it was only referring to the printed image.

I finally went back to the copy of Photoshop 5 LE that I still have, and resized it in approximately 3 seconds.

In any case, was this a case of the 3am stupids? Or is what I'm trying to do either not possible in Elements - or just hidden well?

Anyway to change this (can't find any preference for it...), to the more traditional looking 'contact sheet' with black background...??

I only have Photoshp CS....

Or anybody know of any free, downloadable programs that make good contact sheets (not to print, just for on screen)....??

Saving meshes in Photoshop

I want to create a sequence that shows a nearly square piece of paper being folded, starting with a flat image, then various stages of the fold on different layers. This thing folds more origami like than in accordion or z-folds.

I know you can save a mesh created in "Liquify," but it's far to mushy and liquid to deal with. "Warp" might come closer, but I don't think that you can save the warp as a mesh in order to apply the same warping on another same-size image later. Creating just one layer in this sequence is complicated enough without having to go through it time after time for other similar files. Does anyone have ideas?

Also, "Warp" appears to divide the image up into a grid with 9 pieces. Can that be altered?

We recently upgrades to Photoshop (Extended) CS3 and are running OSX 10.5.2. In both binary and jpeg encoded modes to an HP Laserjet (methinks a 4050N) we get a continuous stream of blank pages (an occasional one will have 6-8 zapf dingbat-looking characters at the top). Our not-so-helpful IT department chose this as the solution:

http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/

now it prints, but looks like some dot-matrix printer from the 80's.

Have any of you encountered this problem and found a different successful workaround?

I had a friend write to ask me for advice. A very talented young girl of 11 wants to go into animation. She's been taking illustration and I recommended that she keep up her pursuit of learning the basics before it moves into the digital world. We've all seen some horrible drawing rendered with realistic textures and lighting created by digital programs.

She'd like to get a head start into computer graphics as well. I mentioned Illustrator and described how some people take their sketches into Photoshop to enhance them. Obviously, Pshop is too expensive to buy for a child who could one day decide "POOF! I want to be a lawyer!"

Keeping in mind the end goal of animation, what would any of you suggest as inexpensive baby-steps programs in that direction? You may also send me packing with another suggestion of a more appropriate tribe for this question, but I'm not in those tribes because animation and digital illustration don't have that much interest to me personally right now.

Thanks.

Photoshop CS Wii

I missed this on the NAPP website last week:

NAPP Newswire Exclusive!
Adobe Photoshop CS Wii
By Bryce Smith

The folks at both Adobe and Nintendo did a spectacular job of keeping this under wraps. And after playing with it for about a month now, to say I've been eager to write this is a major understatement. Adobe Photoshop CS Wii is nothing short of remarkable...and absolute tons of fun. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if it didn't open the way for Wii gaming systems to become legitimate business tools in the not-too-far-off future.

When Adobe Photoshop CS Wii was first handed to me to test and review, I can't say I didn't have reservations. After all, the Nintendo Wii system comes with a very child-friendly "Photo Channel" that allows you to draw cheesy mustaches and put goofy glasses on your photography subjects. If anything, I just assumed Adobe Photoshop CS Wii was going to be a slightly improved version that just carried the Adobe name for marketing purposes. But, about 10-minutes after loading the disc, those initial assumptions were shattered...pleasantly so.

Plain and simple...if you can do it in Photoshop CS3, you can do it on Photoshop CS Wii. Essentally, the Wii controller (or "Wiimote") and the peripheral Nunchuk take the place of your mouse and/or Wacom tablet. Specific menu selections are controlled with the Nunchuk's thumb stick, and frequently used hotkey combinations can be programmed as button/Wiimote movement combinations. Photos and images (as well as brushes) are loaded into the system via SD card or USB storage device, and you can print directly from the Wii through your home or office wireless network.

Okay...I'll admit that working in Adobe Photoshop CS Wii is a bit slower than using the standard version. And, I won't sat that it isn't without its bugs here and there (making anything more than simple selections can be somewhat frustrating unless you have a surgeon's hands or infinite patience). But once you get the hang of it, it makes retouching photos and putting together designs a lot of fun...especially if you have an audience.

Now, I bet you're probably asking yourself when you'll be able to get your hands on this? The answer: probably never. You see...I'm a bit of a prankster and couldn't help but pull your leg a little bit, even if it is a little late for April Fools Day. But, who knows...anything could be possible in the future. Then again, monkeys could also fly...

CS3 bugs with Leopard?

I've come across a few reports of quirkiness of PS CS3 in Leopard, but most seem to be from early this year or 2007 (pre-10.5.2?). Is anyone experiencing any weirdness with PS 10.0.1 and 10.5.2?

I'm trying to add a Levels adjustment layer that I can paint in the levels. The problem is that I either make a mask that's white and I can paint with black to reveal underneath, or I Option click and it makes a vector mask. I want to pain in the Levels adjustment with white. I'm missing something simple - blonde moment. Thanks for help.

... finally bite the bullet, and buy the whole REAL Photoshop from scratch....?

The Photoshop CS i got at my old job has ALWAYS worked just fine - even traveling from my old PowerBook G4, to my spanking new MacBook - altho i do get a dialog box every time i open it that says "One or more files in the Adobe Application Support folder, necessary for running Photoshop, are missing, please run the Photoshop installer, and re-install"..... BUT i've been just pressing "OK" and going on to use it WITH NOOOOO problems in about 2 years of use....

So what would YOU do.....? Try and just buy the upgrade to- what is it now...?? PSCS3 ??? - (which worked JUST LIKE A CHARM for my Illustrator upgrade to CS) or not take the chance and swallow and buy the whole most current real deal...?? Where'd u get urs cheapest...? How much is it running average nowadays...? Anywhere give student discounts...?

Thanks all...................

As there will be no official teacher for the class this is meant for people who are comfortable being self-directed artists. However, if you wish, people of varying skill levels and experience can help and guide each other.

MODELS:
We value diversity so all types of models are encouraged to join regardless of sex, gender, ethnicity, body type. Ideally we would have a good mix of different kinds of models as well as artists

What we offer is a modern and clean studio (with a bathroom) in safe part of SF 4 blocks away from Powell BART

As of today we have these time slots available:
Mondays: 1:00 PM-3:00 PM
Tuesdays: 8:30 AM-12:00 PM, 1:00 PM-3:00 PM
Wednesdays: 1:00 PM-4:00 PM
Fridays: 7:30 PM-9:30 PM
Saturdays: 3:30 PM-9:30 PM
Sundays: 11:00 AM-8:00 PM

Ideally we would like to have a sizable group or groups that meet regularly so that we can make it worthwhile for everyone involved.

If you are interested please let me know:
1. If you are a model, artist, or both
2. You schedule preferences

If you know other people that might be interested please pass this along to them. If you have any further questions please contact me at my email or tribe.

Thank You,
Photoshop CS3 spying????

Adobe Spying On Its Customers
from the now-that's-just-not-very-nice dept

It's not all that surprising these days to hear about software companies having their software "phone home" in some manner or another, though it's often quite annoying. However, it looks like Adobe has taken this to a new level. As highlighted by Valleywag, Adobe's CS3 design software includes a system to provide your usage data quietly to a "behavioral analytics" firm named Omniture. Of course, it does this without ever asking you if you want some random company knowing every time you use this piece of software. While it may not be doing anything nefarious, this certainly has all the hallmarks of spyware, including the fact that it tries to (weakly) disguise the connection to Omniture by making it look like it's simply pinging your local network. It's really amazing that companies keep doing this type of thing thinking that people won't catch on. There may be plenty of legitimate reasons for tracking the usage of a piece of software -- but if so, why not be upfront about it and let the user of the software opt-in to sharing his or her data? Yet another reason to use a firewall that catches these sorts of sneaky outbound connections. Update: John Dowdell, an Adobe employee (and long time Techdirt reader) has replied in the comments, noting that he's talking to folks at Adobe to find out the whole story, but he thinks it's the "live update" function. I'm not sure I understand why a live update function would call an analytics firm -- or why the ping to that analytics firm should be disguised as a local network ping, but that's the story coming out of Adobe right now. Will update again if any more details become clear. Update 2: Further response from Adobe here. It explains what the connection does and also admits that the company should have done a better job making it clear.

Can anybody make me a business card to my specifications and with some graphics and pictures I already have ready to go? I can pay you a small amount of money for it. It shouldnt be too difficult, since I already have my logo and images. I just dont know how to use photoshop very well, and the business card programs usually come out cheesy or with a white background when I want a black background.

This time we went to the Albuquerque Ballon Fiesta and took some great shots, however the two best ones have a very dark shadow from an observer on my right leg. Tried for six hours yersterday to either decrease it or remove it altogether. Managed to expose the graininess of the photo and nothing more. Suggestions please?

brush settings question

I would like to set up my brushes so that the circle brush cursor matches the exact area affected by the paint. I currently have my brush hardness at 100% and am using the standard cursor setting for brushes (basic circle). Unfortunately, this seems to affect only the center area within the circle cursor for the brush, the outer edges of the circle cursor are not laying down paint.

Its probably something simple one of you Photoshop geniuses out there can answer. Thanks in advance. I'm grateful for any advice you may have. This is slowly driving me crazy.

Seems CS3 has this annoying habit of needing to authenticate itself every time it runs, even though it's a perfectly legit installation. Problem is, when this machine is used at an A/V presentation, internet isn't available and therefore Photoshop won't finish loading. It just sits there, waiting to verify indefinitely.

Now I can short circuit this if it's the only way, but I'd prefer not to in this case. What's the newest version of PS I can run that doesn't require verifying?

Thanks all!

best book?

OK, I've got photoshop now, and am looking for the "best" book from a photographer's point of view. There's a lot of reviews on Amazon, but it seems like nearly all of the books are very good. The only one I have right now is "Skin" by Lee Varis and it certainly seems to be full of good information and well worth going through page by page. I ordered and received Photoshop CS2 for photographers by Scott Kirby, but is was missing the introduction -- publishing error, the pages were simply not bound in. I looked through it before I sent it back, and while it also seemed to have a lot of good information and detailed techniques, I wasn't too thrilled that the word count was upped by somewhat out of place humor a bit too often for my taste.

Perhaps the best thing to do is work through the one I have?

Hi all,

I just posted my latest set of fire performance photos on http://rano.us under 'photos', under 'fire performance'. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas about doing cool stuff with fire photos in Photoshop? Filters, techniques, etc?

I do plan to use more lighting and/or flashes at the next shoot and try to capture a clearer image of the performers, while still getting some trails. And perhaps use my fluid-head video tripod to follow the action a bit better and tune-in my framing a bit. Yes, photographing fire performers is like herding cats. Cats on fire even. :} And I mean that with affection.

Thanx!
Best Way to Cut People and Put on Background

I have a series of photos where I'd like to cut the people out and put them on a different (similar) background. I'm looking for the best way to do this.

I know I can select with the Lasso tool. Which is best, Magnetic lasso or just Lasso? What should my settings be for Feather, Width, Edge Contrast and Frequency? Is it best to select the people and create a new Layer via Cut? And then drag that to my background? What else can I do to make it blend in with the background and look less like a cutout?

If there are other better ways, please let me know.

I've posted the background (a colorful yellow, red, and black blanket) as well as an example photo of people (with their faces obscured).

CS2 saving jpg/300 dpi file HELP!

I am working on postcards. Been working for weeks. I am designing at 300 dpi and my image size says 300 spi. When I submit the file for printing (gotprint.com) they tell me it is only 72dpi. I have designed and redesigned these cards...

I am wondering if I am saving wrong or doing something incorrectly??

Please, please can you give me some ideas?

Thank you!

Working with Layers - Aligning, Cropping

I'm laying out a book/album in PS (ok maybe not the best tool but it's what I'm using) and am encountering some questions:

1. How do I select multiple layers and align them? I can see the icons in my toolbar to align but I don't know how.
2. How can I crop a layer without cropping the entire image? It seems if I select the layer and use the Crop tool, it crops all the layers, not just my selected layer.

Thanks!

How to make an image BEHIND an image warped

I am exporting some images of bottles to a Flash website (PNGs) and i want the images BEHIND the bottles to look warped as if you were viewing them through glass.
Here's the site for reference: www.sentemarketing.com/flash/.

I made a layer with a 30% transparency and images on a lower layer look great. Nice and warped. But this effect doesn't export out of Photoshop. Any suggestions? Is there a 3rd party plugin I can get or do I need to use Fireworks instead?

What's the best way to make a CD label in Photoshop? I tried drawing a circle using the Elipse tool but I don't see a way to precisely control the size. I want to use an existing photo for the background, add text, and cut it to CD size to make a label.

File size and format issue

I have a client that wants me to document a project. She has requested JPEG images, 300 dpi that are 7mg files.

I am shooting with a Nikon D70. It produces a 6 mg file in Raw format (NEF file format). Converting it to JPG in Bridge reduces the file size to about 1.5 mg using the lowest compression setting i can see. I can also shoot directly into JPGs in the FINE setting and will produce images that are about 2.5mg

Am i missing something in any of this process, or is she asking for something that can't be done?

I appreciate all input.

Color Management

I'm puzzled....

I'm shooing photos with a Nikon d70, and editing them on a Mac Book. 98% of the time I want to color manage the photos with the web (windows monitors) as my target medium. But on occasion I want to edit photos for being printed.

Can someone quickly walk me through the steps for properly dealing with the color?

First of all, I get a dialogue box:

Embedded Color: Abobe RGB
Working: sRGB IEC616966-2.1

Should I?
a) Use embedded profile (instead of the working space)
b) Convert the document's color to the working space
3) Discard the embedded color (don't color manage

Then under color settings which options should I chose both for editing for web, and editing for print?

Thanks a lot.

Cheers,
-Adam

Hey All,
Love my old Photoshop Elements but it didn't survive the transition to my new iMac and Macbook, both of whom run OSX 10.4. So I need to get a new version of PE. I see a PE5 for Windows but only PE4 for we lowly Appleheads. My question is this: When does PE5 come out for the Mac?

I graduated recently (in May) with my BFA, but my school was a bit outdated when it came to digital work. I am an illustrator that primarily paints but have been trying to get into digital for the past two years. I started with corel painter and got into photoshop and illustrator some time last year. I pretty much know the basics of the programs... and photoshop definitely adds in my photo enhancements.

Are there any books or "things" that people recommend for being Photoshop experts... hahaha?

problem with web use images and saturation

sooo
i just started using this macbok and cs3
and it seems that when i 'save for web', my colorful images are so much less colorful that it is seriously bothering me (didn't seem this way before- but i am using a brand new screen and program- so maybe i didn't notice??)

i wonder, is there something that i can check to keep the colors closer to the original saturation?
i already use the highest jpg option (the little slider bar- ha ha, ok so i am not all that literate in programming, this is obvious)

is there someone here that can tell me the best way to keep colors bright and rich and still go through the save for web process...?...?

thanks in advance

transferring effects between Adobe programs

I've made a logo in Illustrator 10 using two large letters, turned into outlines and then overlapped so they intertwine. There's a slight gradient on the letters. The client wants a hint of a metallic look applied to it. None of the features in Illustrator seem to work. I imported it as a smart object into Photoshop CS2 and applied a slight emboss effect. I want to keep it as a vector. Is it possible to export to Illustrator as a smart object and keep the emboss effect? Or even better would be to save it in some vector format so I could work with it in InDesign CS2.

I'm getting confused by file formats and switching back and forth between programs. What's the best way to keep it as a vector illustration but keep the emboss effect while using it in InDesign or Illustrator? Is this even possible?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Apologies for cross posting.
Thanks,
Jason

Type tool eyedropper problem

I use CS2 and I must have changed a setting and don't know how to change it back. When using the type tool, I will select a color for the letters using the eye drop tool and grabbing the color off of the image I am working on, but I am no longer able to get the eye drop tool to appear and instead I just get a color palette.
Can anyone help me to get my eye dropper back please ?

i'm currently into recoloring/coloring pics. i find that the methods i use do not always apply. mostly i do the following:

paint over a single color in another layer covering the subject then playing with layer styles with a little opacity tweaking

use color balance after painting colors on another layer over the subject (with layer styles)

hue saturation (with and without colorize option)

shadow/highlight after painting over in anther layer and applying layer styles

st. andrew's cross pic? spread-eagled man?

(I tried to post this via 'listings', but here it is)

Anyone have a digital photo of a St. Andrew's Cross? I'm working on a card for a friend, and I need an image - preferably but not necessarily wood, straight frontal view, at least 4x6 print quality.

This would be part of a Photoshop montage, so bonus points if the pic already includes an attractive man in tighty-whities or speedo-type underwear, but I can superimpose him later if you just have the cross.

For anyone worried about copyright issues, this is only for personal use, and I'd be sure to give proper credit. Pretty please? You can either respond here or email me at spydrgyrl [at] gmail [dot] com.

Thank you!

CS3 Bridge vs Lightroom - Dealing with Large Batches of Images

Forgive me if not all my terms are correct here. I'm working with an old version of Photoshop (7.0) which has the File Browser. My understanding is that Bridge is an enhanced version of File Browser. Having just downloaded a trial of Lightroom, I'm really excited about the ability to quickly go through large batches of photos, viewing little thumbnails easily, viewing large images easily, and even using a loupe to zoom in to see detail and then giving them ratings. I can rate in File Browser but I don't think I can view the images large unless I fully open them in Photoshop.

So what I'm wondering, in CS3 Bridge, can you view batches easily (thumbnail, large/screen size/loupe) and quickly rate/star them (I don't want to have to right click to do this..I like how in LR you can just click on the stars you want).

LR seems to be the answer to my prayers to help me sort through large batches faster. But I haven't seen CS3 so I don't know if I just need to upgrade to CS3 to do the same thing.

Thanks!

Grayscale has C,M & Y? How to prep images for B&W newspaper printing?

What's the deal with the color info after you've grayscaled an image that was CMYK? Shouldn't it just be varying amounts of black?

Sending something to be printed in a newspaper for the first time and wondering if I can just export a PDF in greyscale from InDesign(How?) or if not, and I make them black and white in Photoshop, is Image>Mode>Grayscale a good way to do it?

The paper prints some things in color, so I wouldn't want it to actually use any of the other color inks if I'm trying to do black and white, correct? There is going to be black in the piece and so I made a background layer that was CMYK=0,0,0,100. Is that the right way to go about it?

Sometimes I encounter this problem, I have a bitmap image open in Photoshop. and it says index in the layers panel, instead of background. And the options are embossed so they don't function. I can't edit or copy it, or do anything to it.

One of the things that I do all of the time, is rotate an image that is slightly off-level.

But after that's done, I'm left with a crooked border that needs to be cropped away. Is there any automatic way of handling that?

I've always manually selected the area to crop, and it's always been a slight pain in the ass.

Cheers,

Hi…I’m new here…hoping to make some friends. My primary interests are art, new media and environmental stewardship. I’m looking to connect with Digital Artists, to include them in an international touring art exhibition called Common Ground www.commonground2008.com. The theme for each piece in the collection will be about the Environment. We launch our exhibition in Beijing to coincide with the Olympics in 2008, then on to cities in Europe and the Americas in 2009 and 2010. Would love to hear from you and support you any way that I can. Please join my community of friends and our tribe, Common Ground 2008. Peace.

Stopping layers from snapping to a grid

I am having trouble positioning layers in Photoshop6. I often find that while i may be trying to position a new text or image layer (for example, trying to center it top to bottom) that instead of being able to move it smoothly to the position i want it in, the layer will snap to a grid postion, usually making the layer postion unacceptable - its worse on a small or tight layout. I know that on a previous version of Photoshop i was able to turn the "snap to grid" off somewhere, but right now i am at a total loss to find any control that will help? What do i need to do?

Thanks

Help!! I've Ruined a Photograph!

It's the person's only photograph of her mother and brother. And I thought I was being helpful by trying to remove it from the frame. It already had water damage but I've gone and destroyed the original photograph. I'm putting a photo of both here and pleading for advice on how to fix my huge screw up! (It's the one with the guy in the cowboy hat.)

I'm starting by using the old good copy as a layer on top of the spotty one which has better color. Help!!!

Tribe's search engine is acting... well, dead. No responses to any inquiry. So I thought I'd ask in here if any of you have seen an Adobe Premiere editing tribe on Tribe.

Have you? Please post a link. Thanks.

I have a copy of Elements 2.0 that came with my scanner, registration number legal and all. For the last 3 or 4 months, after normal installation and use, the icon disappeared from my apps in the doc. I checked the apps folder, the icon for Elements is there, but it's a white page, not the sunflower. I double clicked, and it opened, but did not seem to function right. I reinstalled the whole thing from the CD, after running MacJanitor and Repair Permissions, but still no joy.
I reinstall again, restart, and now, when I click the Elements icon, (still a white page, not a flower) it opens script editor. What have I done wrong, or is it that my old eMac, 10.4.9 is croaking from old age?
TIA
