I'll bet you take a BIG hit moving image data back and forth and use THEIR bandwidth!
Gimp.app on my Mac is only about 199M
Why worry about disk space? Whenever I run low I go out and buy another 500G HD
for about 150 bucks. In the last 2 years I have created over 2TB of images and animations.
Just bought 2 new 500G drives and they will both be filled within 6 months.
Each of my animations requires about 30-50G of intermediate files to generate a 1G movie file.

You don't have to download the app. to use it. I just have a Icon, which I assume links to the GIMP site and it's only 4 kb. Why take up the space with a program you didn't pay for? If you change computers just get the link again. It runs on a PC also. I have no problems with it.

It's X.11. I found it to be a painless install, and the thing works perfectly. If you have any questions, I'm sure the folks over in the Mac OSX tribe will be able to fill in any gaps for you.

You don't have to do that, as far as I remember. That means you have to download a program to run another program. Maybe you have to download a Java environment but it's been so long, I can't recall.

I have been trying it for awhile and I find it just as powerful as Adobe's Photoshop. You must download a runtime version instead of the actual software, but so what, it's free to use. The documentation is on a website.

The tools are varied and flexible with many options under each. I use the common ones of course: crop, color changes, copy and paste. I use copy and paste to replace large sections of unwanted background with a neutral section from another part of the image. My favorite is the smudge tool that I use with different brush sizes to clean up a photo or to remove unwanted bits or to clean up blemishes (or wrinkles). The burn tool is good for enhancing edges or to highlight a section. I did not notice any slowness or response problems.

I recommend it for cash strapped photoeditors! Why pay the bucks for Adobe?

I tried it on my Mac at work because it was free and it's OK, but it's interface is quite different from Photoshop, though there's a version of the GIMP for the Mac that tries to replicate as much of the Photoshop interface as possible and that helps. The biggest things I found are that the GIMP is noticeably slower than PS, and many of the controls for various things have different sensitivities that make them less convenient to use.

If you're not put off by the learning curve it is a powerful and very capable program, plus it's free so I'd suggest giving it a try - you may really like it.

Good luck!

There is at least one book "Beginning GIMP" by Akkana Peck from Apress.
Working my way through it and I think it is very well done!
Querying Amazon, looks like several others to choose from, including official docs.
OTOH: I almost always use ImageJ. Another free application. VERY different from GIMP.
I find it much more suitable for my type of artwork.
