I have been trying it for awhile and I find it just as powerful as Adobe's Photoshop. You must download a runtime version instead of the actual software, but so what, it's free to use. The documentation is on a website.

The tools are varied and flexible with many options under each. I use the common ones of course: crop, color changes, copy and paste. I use copy and paste to replace large sections of unwanted background with a neutral section from another part of the image. My favorite is the smudge tool that I use with different brush sizes to clean up a photo or to remove unwanted bits or to clean up blemishes (or wrinkles). The burn tool is good for enhancing edges or to highlight a section. I did not notice any slowness or response problems.

I recommend it for cash strapped photoeditors! Why pay the bucks for Adobe?

I tried it on my Mac at work because it was free and it's OK, but it's interface is quite different from Photoshop, though there's a version of the GIMP for the Mac that tries to replicate as much of the Photoshop interface as possible and that helps. The biggest things I found are that the GIMP is noticeably slower than PS, and many of the controls for various things have different sensitivities that make them less convenient to use.

If you're not put off by the learning curve it is a powerful and very capable program, plus it's free so I'd suggest giving it a try - you may really like it.
