I've tried a few different techniques for this but I'm getting a really jagged edge result.
Logo is black lettering and picture silhoutte on a white background.

Re: Best way to remove white background from logo
Sun, October 21, 2007 - 9:36 PMSounds like you might have a really low-res version of the logo - I get the same effect when trying to edit pictures I've gotten from the web. Any way for you to get a high-res version of the logo, say 300ppi or larger? That would probably make your job MUCH easier.

Re: Best way to remove white background from logo
Sun, October 21, 2007 - 11:29 PMAfter you do your first separation, you may need to blow things up real large and fix pixel by pixel. I had to do that when I needed to pull a logo from a stat that was originally the art for the clients letterhead. Painful, but it finally worked.

Re: Best way to remove white background from logo
Mon, October 22, 2007 - 9:25 AMThanks- I just emailed the company that I need a better version of the logo. I thought that might be what it was but I'm a beginner photoshopper so I thought maybe it was something I was doing wrong. -

Re: Best way to remove white background from logo
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 10:07 AMReally, you want Illustrator for this. Import to illustrator and then convert to a vector graphic by using the Live Trace tool. Most the logos you see were created as vector graphics. Don't get me wrong, I used to be all about photoshop too... but then, I discovered what a clean line I could get with Illustrator...
Anyhow:
Open Illustrator CS2 or later.
File > New - To open a new file of whatever bounds.
File > Place - To place your logo image
Click on image so that it is selected.
Choose "Live Trace" from the image menu underneath the main menu bar on the top. (around the middle top of the screen)
Go to Object > Expand
Expand all of it.
Go to your Layers Pallete and delete the white parts...
It's likely that itwon't give you exactly what you want based on it's own presets. Clicking the downward arrow to the right of "Live Trace" will give you various options. Play around with the settings til you get what you want. Ultimately however, turning it into a vector graphic will give you what you want- no jagged edges. Then, when you are done, you can save it and import it into Photoshop at whatever size you need.
Ultimately, this was at once time a program called "Adobe Streamline" but was discontinued (only for OS9?) and has been incorporated into Illustrator CS2. More on it here:
www.adobe.com/products/il..._content.pdf
Ultimately, I would ask the company for a vector based logo. Also, if this seems too short and simple (maybe you're getting paid hourly and you're like OMG now i just shaved two hours off my time...) don't sweat it: just say "Logo vectorization" and it costs X amount...

Re: Best way to remove white background from logo
Thu, November 15, 2007 - 10:21 AMWow there's a much simpler way to handle this issue. Use the "darken" feature under layer effects on your layers pallet. This is the thing that's by default set to normal in the upper left hand corner of the pallet.
It drops the white information from the image and does so without altering the layer itself. multiply works similarly. -

Re: Best way to remove white background from logo
Thu, November 15, 2007 - 12:49 PMAnd you can also go to your Layers palette
make sure it is a layer (double click the background name and it will become a layer)
Then once it is a layer just double click the name again to bring up the Layer Style options.
Go to the bottom and option click if on a Mac or Alt if on a PC on the top Right White little diamond
which will break it apart.
Then slide the leftmost part to the left to erase white from image, and then drag the other part left as well
to erase all the White.
This 2 step process makes the white go away more smoothly.
Kinda hard to explain-hope you understand.

Re: Best way to remove white background from logo
Mon, November 26, 2007 - 7:12 PMI'm a bit late on this one, but if it's ok to save it as a transparency...
for a logo that's supposed to be a solid symbol or really crisp, i'd probably try to redraw it or get a better copy. It's a logo that's by default a little softer around the edges, this is the technique i use for cutting stuff out of white...
open logo
make layer from background
add mask
select white with magic wand
selection<modify<expand (only 1 or 2 pixels should be necessary considering the resolution of a logo that's pixelating already, you want the selection to be just barely over the edges of the logo)
fill with black
filter<gaussian blur (be sure you have the mask selected, not the logo)
change the settings a bit so that the edges start to become transparent without showing white (It helps to place a layer temporarily underneath the layer with a vivid color, like red, black, or green, something that isn't in the logo, so you can see the edges)
If you're not happy enough with that, take a brush with varying hardness and spruce up the areas by hand.
once you're satisfied, delete the mask. It will ask you if you want to apply the mask before deleting, say yes. Then delete any temporary layers you might have made, and save as a png or other transparency capable file.
That way it will be complementary on nearly any color.
I use a mask becasue then if you screw up, it's super easy to jsut erase the black chunks until you're happy. You don't have to history brush it back, or what not...
