Stupid question, but I have to know. I am buying a mac version soon. Also, I want to buy a student version. Has anyone done this? I am looking for a Photoshop class, so I assume they may offer the program at a student price?

The new version of Photoshop uses an online activation process, so you can install the software on multiple computers, but it can only be active on one at a time. This means you have to remember to change your activation between the various computers every time you use it on a different system, which can get a bit tedious. One possible alternative might be to get a copy of Photoshop Elements for one of the computers. It doesn't have all the high-end features of the full Photoshop, but it's still pretty good and you can do quite a bit with it.

    Good luck!

Dana, are you sure? I have CS4 installed on two computers right now, and I don't have to do anything to make it work besides run it.

The standard license allows three computers, I believe.

I was told the above information by a co-worker and believed him because he had the software and had been trying to install and use Photoshop on two computers, but I just now checked Adobe's site and it says you can install it on two computers, but only use it on one at a time, and both copies can only be used by the same person (you can't share an installation with someone). Here's the exact text:

"The activation process for individual products purchased at retail outlets supports installation on up to two computers. The Adobe product license agreement allows the primary user to install the product on a primary computer and also on a home or laptop computer for his or her use, provided that the two copies are not used simultaneously. While the activation process supports installing and activating Adobe software on two computers, use of the product on the second computer is restricted to the user who licensed the software. Allowing others to use a second copy of the software violates the product license agreement."

So, Patti, you're correct - you *can* install and easily run CS4 on two computers, but you can't run both copies at the same time. This is how I remember the old Photoshop 7 working, but I hadn't looked into it in detail until you posted your experience, so thanks for doing that.

And to be complete, while you can't legally use it on two computers at once, there are no technical limitations on that. I leave CS4 running pretty much 100% of the time on my desktop computer, and fire it up on my laptop when I need it.

I've also been able to call their technical support and get a third activation when I got a new laptop and wasn't in a position to uninstall from the old machine.
