CS2 saving jpg/300 dpi file HELP!

topic posted Thu, July 12, 2007 - 1:33 PM by  erin johnson
I am working on postcards. Been working for weeks. I am designing at 300 dpi and my image size says 300 spi. When I submit the file for printing (gotprint.com) they tell me it is only 72dpi. I have designed and redesigned these cards...

I am wondering if I am saving wrong or doing something incorrectly??

Please, please can you give me some ideas?

Thank you!

If you're saving something for print, don't save it as a .jpg. Jpg's have horrible compression.

Save it as a .tif at the desired print size (in inches) at 300 dpi as you were doing. Also, not sure if they specified a color mode, but CMYK is typically used for print. RGB for web/video output.

      thank you!

I will try that...could saving in jpg be the reason it is coming up on there end 72dpi?

      Should I try flattening?

If you are saving at .jpg by using the "save for web" link, then yes. It will optimize for the web.

But if you just go to "save as," then it shouldn't alter the resolution.

However, saving as .tif will certainly preserve your image quality and resolution.

        :)

No need to flatten. This will happen as part of the saving process.

Actually, no, you need to flatten the file. CS2 will save a tiff file and retain your layers, leaving you with a huge TIFF file.

So you should always Save, flatten, output to TIFF and close the file without saving again.

Also, you can use LZW compression on the TIFF file to make it smaller, but ask whomever you're sending it too if their systems can use it, most likely they can.

            Thanks, Skooter.

I think I already have my default .tif settings set to not save layers.

            My bad.

            :)

Erin, I hope you can sort this out~

Get rid of Shrinkpic and your problems are solved

              From Their site:

"Shrink Pic allows you to send dozens of photos as email attachments - quickly and with no effort at all!
All you need to do is install Shrink Pic. It automatically detects when you're sending large photo files and compresses them in the background."

              Oh yeah, that's right.

I forgot that the option is now placed in the 'save as' dialog. So no need to save, flatten, etc., But you did need to remember to (un)check the box. I think after the first time it warns you about saving layers with a TIFF, it gives you a dialog box with the option to never show it again - it's very easy to overlook it after that.
