I am working on postcards. Been working for weeks. I am designing at 300 dpi and my image size says 300 spi. When I submit the file for printing (gotprint.com) they tell me it is only 72dpi. I have designed and redesigned these cards...
I am wondering if I am saving wrong or doing something incorrectly??
Please, please can you give me some ideas?
Thank you!

Re: CS2 saving jpg/300 dpi file HELP!
Thu, July 12, 2007 - 3:32 PMIf you're saving something for print, don't save it as a .jpg. Jpg's have horrible compression.
Save it as a .tif at the desired print size (in inches) at 300 dpi as you were doing. Also, not sure if they specified a color mode, but CMYK is typically used for print. RGB for web/video output. -

Thu, July 12, 2007 - 3:47 PMthank you!
I will try that...could saving in jpg be the reason it is coming up on there end 72dpi?
Should I try flattening?

Re: CS2 saving jpg/300 dpi file HELP!
Thu, July 12, 2007 - 3:50 PMIf you are saving at .jpg by using the "save for web" link, then yes. It will optimize for the web.
But if you just go to "save as," then it shouldn't alter the resolution.
However, saving as .tif will certainly preserve your image quality and resolution.
:)
No need to flatten. This will happen as part of the saving process. -

Re: CS2 saving jpg/300 dpi file HELP!
Thu, July 12, 2007 - 5:25 PMNo, it won't ask for resolution. It will save at the same resolution as the .psd file you've been working with.
You can double check your resolution by going to Image Size in the drop down menus under Adjustments. -

Re: CS2 saving jpg/300 dpi file HELP!
Thu, July 12, 2007 - 5:30 PMThank you so much for working with me on this!
I have checked image size and it states 350dpi.
I am lost.
Could it be the "shrinkpic" software I have on the computer?
I am drawing for straws!
I submitted some text for writing pens today and it too is just 72 dpi.

Actually, no, you need to flatten the file. CS2 will save a tiff file and retain your layers, leaving you with a huge TIFF file.
So you should always Save, flatten, output to TIFF and close the file without saving again.
Also, you can use LZW compression on the TIFF file to make it smaller, but ask whomever you're sending it too if their systems can use it, most likely they can. -

Re: CS2 saving jpg/300 dpi file HELP!
Thu, July 12, 2007 - 7:29 PMThanks, Skooter.
I think I already have my default .tif settings set to not save layers.
My bad.
:)
Erin, I hope you can sort this out~ -

Re: CS2 saving jpg/300 dpi file HELP!
Thu, July 12, 2007 - 7:57 PMGet rid of Shrinkpic and your problems are solved
From Their site:
"Shrink Pic allows you to send dozens of photos as email attachments - quickly and with no effort at all!
All you need to do is install Shrink Pic. It automatically detects when you're sending large photo files and compresses them in the background."

Re: CS2 saving jpg/300 dpi file HELP!
Fri, July 13, 2007 - 2:22 AMOh yeah, that's right.
I forgot that the option is now placed in the 'save as' dialog. So no need to save, flatten, etc., But you did need to remember to (un)check the box. I think after the first time it warns you about saving layers with a TIFF, it gives you a dialog box with the option to never show it again - it's very easy to overlook it after that. -

Re: CS2 saving jpg/300 dpi file HELP!
Mon, September 24, 2007 - 6:42 PMgetting to this way late, but for future reference-- the problem is just that jpg doesn't store dpi information.
